Sri Acharya Rakum – He is the Principal of Sri Rakum School for the Blind, a free residential school for the visually challenged and for the sighted underprivileged students.
He left behind a career in martial arts in Japan and came India to pursue what he calls the “creative use of his power. The realization that children who were born blind were shunned and denied opportunities to grow, inspired him to start the school. The Sri Rakum School is a unique NGO running entirely on support by patrons and donations by the general public and corporates.
This school provides free housing, food, clothes, vocational training and formal education from nursery to post-graduation. The school’s curriculum focuses on the acquisition of life skills and focuses on extracurricular activities like karate, yoga, music, dance, fine arts and crafts. The training imparted includes reading, writing with Braille and mobility training for the blind.
He believes in giving the children their own fishing rods, rather than in fishing for them, so each of them can go on to help themselves and also others in need.
